What To Expect
Before it starts, the massage therapist may ask the client about any problem areas so they know where to focus their attention. The client may be told to lay on their side or move around so the target area can be addressed properly.
Because deep tissue massage goes so far down into the muscles, it may be a little painful at times. But if anything feels too harsh on the body, it is important to tell the therapist.
One should not expect a harsher version of a Swedish massage because the two techniques are different. For example, a massage therapist giving a deep tissue massage may use techniques such as stripping and friction, which are both centered around applying intense pressure.
After the massage is over, one may experience soreness, but it should go away within a day or two. This occurs because of the abnormal amount of pressure the superficial muscles receive. This mild pain or soreness is not something to worry about unless it perpetuates for longer than a couple of days.
